Foundation and finances

The Research Institute for Evangelism and Church Development (IEEG) was founded in 2004, as an university institute of the Theological Faculty of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald. It is the only university institute within all German-speaking countries which works on issues of missionary church development.

The focal points of our work are research and education in missionary church development and evangelism. Our approach to mission is holistic; integrating diaconical with evangelistic emphases. We do research and we teach with an ecumenical horizon and as part of an international network.

At present, there are six people working at IEEG, who are almost completely financed by third-party funds.

Among others, some current research projects are: „Church in Rural Areas“, „Adults Finding Faith“, or „Evangelistic Homiletics“. Moreover, part of our research work is the supervision of doctoral and habilitation dissertations; as well as, publications and symposiums.

Our education programmes aim at training and further education opportunities for students of theology, as well as ministers and pastors. To both groups, we offer a curriculum providing a range of various courses focusing on issues of church development.

Furthermore, the IEEG is entrusted with working as an agency for mission ministries within the Pomeranian Evangelical Church (as of 2012: Protestant Church in North Germany, emphasis on West Pomerania). As such, it advises synods, bodies of church leadership and individual church leaders, for example.

The IEEG is almost exclusively supported by third-party funds. That means: as an university institute, it can make use of the infrastructure of the University of Greifswald, yet, all costs related to staff and resources are met by third-party funds.

Several regional churches of Germany contribute to funding the IEEG: the Northern Protestant Church, the Protestant-Lutheran Church of Hannover, the Protestant-Lutheran Church of Saxony, the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Important supporters of the Institute are the Deichmann-Stiftung (Essen), Stiftung Christliche Medien (SCM), Stiftung Wertestarter (Berlin) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Missionarische Dienste (Agency for Mission Ministries, AMD). Furthermore, for the conducting of symposia, the IEEG is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Community, DFG) and the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung.

Further financial resources are received through donations to the Verein zur Förderung der Erforschung von Evangelisation und Gemeineentwicklung e.V. (sponsoring association of the institute).
